Dr Crokes in deep trouble after narrow loss to Templenoe
Templenoe have once again proven to be Dr Crokes’ bogey team as they have just survived an assault by Dr Crokes to defeat the Killarney Aristocrats by a single point at Templenoe and this has Tadgh Morley and his troops looking towards the top and free from relegation worries.
But it’s a case of history repeating itself as the last time Crokes traveled to Templenoe they suffered another one-point loss which left their club’s Championship hopes in tatters, needing to win a relegation game against their neighbors Killarney Legion, just to retain their superior status. So it’s a repeat and rinse case for Crokes unless they can beat Stacks.
Now Crokes have lost both of their games in Group B and need to beat Austin Stacks at home next weekend and they could still be embroiled in a relegation dogfight from the Senior Championship.
This time they came out on top early, with the exceptional Micheál Burns shooting a beauty. Templenoe responded instantly, as a foul on Adrian Spillane saw Aidan Crowley open their account. Templenoe successfully pressed Crokes’ spot kick early on as more points followed in quick succession from Killian Spillane (2f) and Patrick Clifford.
Templenoe was more direct than Crokes at this stage, with Killian Spillane still dangerous inside, and fully deserved his 0-5 0-01 lead. However, the Crokes were just warming up their engines and came to life. Neil O’Shea, Evan Looney and especially Micheál Burns were in the foreground, but unsurprisingly it was sniper Tony Brosnan who provided the vanguard, securing a free win from Cillian O’Regan, forcing a big save to Mark Looney, and shoot the rebound from a very tight angle. At the water break, Templenoe was still leading 0-5 to 0-3, but knew they were in competition now!
The game only got better – both teams played excellent football. Killian Spillane latched on to a very long ball from Gavin Crowley and punched over the bar to give Templenoe a narrow 0-6, 0-5 halftime lead.
Aidan Crowley converted the ’45 smoothly to put two runs between them. Crokes came back, veteran Daithí Casey catching a long ball out of defense and smartly sliding it to McMahon for a superb goal to put it at 1-5 at 0-7, and Crokes in front for the first time.
Gavin Crowley had the proverbial stormer and launched a great equalizer from distance. Just before the second water break, Mark Casey fired over the top spot, 1-5 at 0-9 and Crokes was on the grid. But in the 56th minute, Michael Potts equalized for this young Crokes team. But at the start of added time, Aidan Crowley became Templenoe’s hero when he kicked the winning run from distance and Dr Crokes knows they are in deep trouble.
