Horse disqualified from Southwell win after bizarrely testing positive for HAIR LOSS drug
A HORSE has won a victory – after testing positive for a powerful HAIR LOSS drug.
Presenter Pete was bizarrely disqualified after a banned substance was discovered in his post-race sample following his win at Southwell on June 20.
The five-year-old trained by John Mackie had minoxidil in his system – commonly used in the treatment of alopecia.
He was routinely tested after winning a 2m4f handicap earlier this summer and immediately returned positive.
It was a headache for veteran trainer Mackie, but an investigation was launched and the source of the contamination was found to be the horse’s owner.
On race morning, he had visited Presenting Pete at Mackie’s stable and spent time snuggling up to him and feeding him carrots.

He was using a topical scalp treatment – and accidentally passed it on to his horse.
Mackie, who trains a small chain of horses near Derby, was warned by race bosses after the investigation.
But they were convinced there was nothing malicious about the positive test – and accepted the slightly embarrassing explanation.
A statement from the BHA Disciplinary Committee said: “The Chairman (of the Disciplinary Committee) noted that minoxidil was a drug used to lower blood pressure and used topically in the treatment of alopecia.

“It has no obvious use for horses and it has been confirmed that the owner of Presenting Pete used a formula containing minoxidil and fed the horses carrots on race day.
“He also noted that there were reasonable precautions in place in the yard.”
It’s not the first time a racehorse has tested positive for an unexpected substance due to contamination.
Several years ago, a horse tested positive for COCAINE after coming into contact with a stable hand who had used the drug.
And there have been several positive tests for the highly toxic arsenic in recent years – one that was recently blamed by trainer Richard Hannon on algae.
